Your progress and notes stay on your iPhone. To see where people continue or leave, Outward screen-records the first-run questions and subscription screen for product analytics, so your first-run answers appear in that recording. Your name is covered. No accounts, no ads, no cross-app tracking, and we never sell your data.
01Who we are
Outward is an iOS app published on the App Store by its independent developer ("Outward", "we", "us"). The developer named as the seller on Outward's App Store page is responsible for your personal data under this policy (the "controller", in GDPR terms). You can reach us any time at support@theoutwardapp.com.
02What Outward keeps
- Your first-run answers: your name, age range, goals, the situations that are hard for you and your starting ratings.
- Your progress through the program: the lessons you finish, your tasks and reps, forecasts and reality checks, your fear ladder, check-ups and Charisma Score, courage, coins and rank.
- What you write in the Toolkit: field notes, reframes and saved lines.
- Your settings: your name, if you add one, and your reminder settings.
03Where it's kept
Outward stores your answers, name, program progress and Toolkit writing on your iPhone, inside the app. We don't run servers that hold this data, and there is no Outward account. If your iPhone backs up to iCloud or a computer, that data is part of the backup under Apple's terms or your own.
Separately, product-usage events and a screen recording of the first-run questions and the subscription screen are sent to our analytics provider, PostHog, as described in the next section.
04Product analytics and screen recording
Outward uses PostHog to understand the first-run journey, so we can make it clearer and fix the places where people get stuck.
Events
Outward sends events such as: which onboarding or subscription screen is viewed or completed, whether Back is tapped, how long a step takes, how many answers were selected, which subscription plan is selected, and whether a purchase or restore succeeds, is cancelled or fails. Events never contain the content of your answers, your progress, your scores or your notes.
Screen recording
While you go through the first-run questions and the subscription screen, PostHog also records what's on the screen, where you tap and the timing of the app's network requests. Your name is covered wherever it appears. Everything else on those screens shows as it is, so the recording shows what you choose there, including your answers. Recording stops once you're in the program, and recordings are kept for 30 days.
Device details
With events and recordings, PostHog receives a random identifier made for this app, and basic device and app details such as the app version, iOS version, device type, locale and timestamps. PostHog also sees the IP address of the connection, as any internet service does. Outward does not create a PostHog profile with your name or email.
05Subscriptions
Outward Pro is bought through the App Store. Apple handles the payment and we never see your card details. To check whether you're subscribed, Outward uses RevenueCat, which receives an anonymous ID made for this app, your App Store purchase records and basic device details such as the app version, iOS version and App Store country. It never receives your answers, progress or notes.
Apple's handling of your purchase is covered by Apple's Privacy Policy.
06Reminders
The daily reminder is a notification your iPhone schedules for itself; nothing goes through a server. It's off until you turn it on, and you can turn it off in Profile or in the iPhone's Settings at any time.
07What we don't do
- Outward has no accounts or sign-in.
- Outward contains no advertising and no advertising SDKs.
- We don't track you across other companies' apps or websites, and the app never asks for permission to.
- We don't sell or rent personal data, or share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.
- Your program progress, later scores and notes are never sent to analytics; your first-run answers reach it only inside the screen recording described above, and your name never does.
08Why we may use your data
If you're in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, data protection law asks us to name a legal basis for each use:
| Use | Legal basis |
|---|---|
| Checking your subscription and restoring purchases (RevenueCat) | Performance of our contract with you: we can't unlock Outward Pro without it. |
| Product analytics and the first-run screen recording (PostHog) | Our legitimate interest in understanding where people get stuck and improving the app. You can object at any time (see Your rights). |
| Answering your emails | Our legitimate interest in helping you, or steps you ask us to take before or under a contract. |
| Data kept only on your iPhone | We don't receive it, so we don't process it. It's there to make the program work for you. |
10How long we keep it
- Screen recordings: 30 days, then deleted automatically.
- Analytics events: kept for as long as they help us improve the app, and deleted when they no longer do.
- Subscription records: as long as RevenueCat and Apple need them to provide the service and meet legal obligations.
- Emails to support: as long as needed to help you, and then for a reasonable period in case you follow up.
- Data on your iPhone: until you restart the program or delete the app.
11Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR, the UK GDPR or US state privacy laws such as the CCPA), you can ask us to access, correct, delete or export personal data we hold about you, to restrict or object to how we use it, and you can withdraw any consent you've given. We won't treat you differently for using these rights.
To make a request, email support@theoutwardapp.com. Because Outward has no accounts and analytics use a random identifier, we may ask for details that help us find your records, such as roughly when you installed the app and the device you used. If you're in the EEA or UK, you also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
12Deleting your data
- Restart program in Profile clears your progress; choose Restart and erase my notes to clear the Toolkit too.
- Deleting Outward from your iPhone removes everything it stored on the device.
- Screen recordings delete themselves after 30 days. To ask us to delete analytics data sooner, email us.
13This website
This website doesn't use cookies, analytics or tracking pixels, and has no forms. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which receives your IP address to deliver them. The company that hosts the site may keep standard server logs (such as IP address, browser and pages requested) for security and reliability. Email links open your own mail app.
14Children
Outward is made for adults and isn't directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has used Outward and data about them reached us, email us and we'll delete it.
15Security
Data sent from the app to our providers travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Data on your iPhone is protected by iOS, including its device encryption when you use a passcode. No system is perfectly secure, but we keep what we collect small on purpose.
16Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will appear here and in the app with a new effective date. If a change matters, for example a new kind of data leaving your iPhone, we'll make it clear in the app before it takes effect.
