Outward is a self-help program, not therapy. You choose every real-world exercise and you stay in charge of your own safety and comfort, and everyone else's. Outward Pro renews automatically through the App Store until you cancel, which you can do any time in Settings, at least 24 hours before the period ends.
01The agreement
These Terms of Use ("Terms") are an agreement between you and the developer of Outward, named as the seller on Outward's App Store page ("Outward", "we", "us"). They cover the Outward app, the Outward Pro subscription and this website (together, the "Service"). By downloading, opening or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use Outward.
Your use of the app is also governed by Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the "Apple EULA"). If these Terms and the Apple EULA conflict, the Apple EULA wins to the extent of the conflict. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal data and is part of these Terms.
02Who can use Outward
Outward is made for adults. You must be at least 13 years old to use it, and if you're under 18 (or under the age of majority where you live), you may use it only with the permission of a parent or guardian, who agrees to these Terms for you. You must be able to make purchases on the App Store under Apple's rules to subscribe.
03Not therapy or medical advice
Outward is a self-help and education program. It uses techniques from cognitive behavioural therapy, such as facing a fear one step at a time, but it is not therapy, counselling, medical care or a medical device, and it can't diagnose, treat or cure any condition. Nothing in the Service is medical or psychological advice, and using it doesn't create a therapist–client or any other professional relationship.
If anxiety gets in the way of your work, sleep or relationships, or a step feels like too much, talk to your doctor or a licensed mental health professional. If you're in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line right away. Outward isn't built for emergencies. You can find a free, confidential helpline in your country at findahelpline.com.
04The real-world exercises
Each day of the program pairs a lesson with small exercises you do out in the world, like saying hi, asking a question or starting a conversation. You decide whether, when, where and how to do each one. By doing them, you agree to:
- Use your judgement. Skip or adapt any exercise that feels unsafe, unsuitable for your health, or wrong for the place you're in. A hard day's Floor is always an option, and so is doing nothing.
- Respect other people. Accept "no", silence or a closed door the first time. Never follow, pressure, harass, touch, film or photograph anyone without consent, and never keep talking to someone who wants to leave.
- Follow the law and local rules, including the rules of any venue, workplace or public transport you're in.
- Stay aware of your surroundings and never do an exercise while driving, cycling or anywhere it could distract you from danger.
Outward isn't responsible for how other people respond to you, or for what happens during an exercise you choose to do, except where the law doesn't allow us to exclude that responsibility.
05Outward Pro and billing
The full program is available with Outward Pro, an auto-renewing subscription sold through Apple's App Store. Outward Pro includes the 60-day program and any programs we add to the app while your subscription is active. The plans, prices and any free trial or offer are shown in the app before you buy, in your local currency.
- Payment. Payment is charged to your Apple ID account when you confirm the purchase, or when a free trial ends.
- Automatic renewal. Your subscription renews automatically for the same period (monthly or yearly) at the then-current price unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your Apple ID account is charged for renewal within the 24 hours before the current period ends.
- Free trials. If a plan offers a free trial (for example, 3 days), you won't be charged during the trial. Unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends, the trial converts into a paid subscription and you're charged the price shown at sign-up. Free trials are for new subscribers and are limited to one per Apple ID, as decided by Apple. If you buy a subscription during a trial, any unused part of the trial ends.
- Offers. We may sometimes offer a discounted plan. Its price, period and whether it renews at the same price are shown before you buy.
- Price changes. If we change a subscription's price, Apple will tell you in advance and, where the law or Apple's rules require it, ask for your consent before the new price applies.
- Restoring. If you reinstall Outward or switch iPhones with the same Apple ID, tap Restore on the subscription screen to unlock Outward Pro again.
06Cancelling and refunds
You can manage or cancel your subscription any time in your iPhone's Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → Outward, or in the App Store app. After you cancel, Outward Pro stays active until the end of the period you've already paid for. Deleting the app does not cancel your subscription.
Because Apple handles all payments, refunds are handled by Apple under its own policies. You can ask for one at reportaproblem.apple.com. We can't issue refunds ourselves. Nothing in these Terms takes away any right to a refund or to withdraw from a purchase that you have under the consumer law where you live.
07Your licence
We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the Outward app on Apple devices you own or control, as allowed by the App Store's Usage Rules, for your own non-commercial use. You agree not to:
- copy, sell, rent, sublicense or redistribute the app or its content;
- reverse engineer, decompile or try to extract the app's source code, except where the law allows it;
- bypass or tamper with the subscription, purchase checks or any security feature;
- scrape, record or republish lessons, images, field guides or other content, or use them to train AI models;
- use the Service in a way that breaks the law or harms other people.
08Our content
Outward's lessons, stories, characters, illustrations, field guides, exercises, coins, design, name and logo are owned by us or our licensors and protected by intellectual property law. These Terms don't give you any ownership of them. You're welcome to share screenshots of your own progress for personal, non-commercial purposes.
09Your content
What you write in Outward, like your field notes, reframes, saved lines and fear ladder, belongs to you and stays on your iPhone. We don't receive it, except that your first-run answers appear in the short screen recording described in our Privacy Policy. You're responsible for keeping your own backups.
10Changes to the app
We're always improving Outward, so lessons, exercises and features may change, be added or be removed. We won't take away the core of what you've paid for during a paid period. If we ever stop offering Outward Pro, we'll stop renewals and tell you in the app. The app may need a recent version of iOS, and some features may need an internet connection.
11Disclaimers
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Service is provided "as is" and "as available". We don't promise any particular result, including that you'll feel less anxious or reach any score, rank or goal, and we don't promise that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free.
Some countries don't allow these disclaimers. If you're a consumer, you keep all the rights you have under the law where you live, and nothing in these Terms limits them.
12Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses, or for loss of data, arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability to you for any claim about the Service is limited to the amount you paid for Outward Pro in the 12 months before the claim.
Nothing in these Terms limits liability that can't be limited by law, such as liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud. If you live in the EU or UK, we're responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breaking these Terms or failing to use reasonable care and skill.
13Ending these terms
You can stop using Outward at any time by deleting the app and cancelling your subscription. We may suspend or end your access if you seriously or repeatedly break these Terms, for example by tampering with purchases. Sections that by their nature should survive (such as our content, disclaimers, limitation of liability and governing law) survive the end of these Terms.
14Apple and the App Store
These Terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple isn't responsible for the app or its content, and has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for it. If the app fails to meet any applicable warranty, you can tell Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price (if any); to the maximum extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the app.
We, not Apple, are responsible for handling any claims about the app, including product liability claims, claims that it fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, consumer protection claims, and claims that it infringes someone's intellectual property. You confirm that you're not located in a country subject to a US government embargo or designated as "terrorist supporting", and that you're not on any US government list of prohibited or restricted parties. You must also follow any third-party terms that apply when you use the app, such as your mobile carrier's.
Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and, once you accept them, have the right to enforce them against you.
15Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the country where we're established, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. If you're a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you can bring a claim in the courts there.
If you have a problem, please email us first. Most things can be sorted out quickly that way. If you live in the EU, you can also use the European Commission's online dispute resolution information at consumer-redress.ec.europa.eu.
16Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms as Outward changes or the law requires. The current version will always be on this page with its effective date. If a change is significant, we'll let you know in the app before it takes effect. If you keep using Outward after a change takes effect, the new Terms apply; if you don't agree, you can cancel and stop using the app.
If any part of these Terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce a part straight away, we haven't given up the right to later. These Terms, the Apple EULA and our Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service.
